GOOD SHEPHERD EMERGENCY RELIEF
30 Balga Road, Balga

The primary role of the Good Shepherd Emergency Relief Agency is to provide food to clients in need

Good Shepherd ‘Emergency Relief’ is open to clients Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am to 11.30am. It is manned by Teresa, the administrator, and approximately seventeen volunteer staff, each working one morning on opening days. There can also be up to three ‘work placement’ volunteers helping out at any one time.
As a general rule, clients can attend Good Shepherd only three times in a financial year.
The primary role of the Good Shepherd Emergency Relief volunteer is as follows:
• The client rings Good Shepherd for an appointment
• When client arrives, they present their Health Care Card at the front desk
• Client is interviewed in a private room and given food, vouchers, and sometimes financial assistance, depending on their circumstances. If needing assistance with numerous bills, client is referred to Anglicare’s Financial Counsellor, who arranges a further appointment time. There is also assistance with baby milk, baby food, nappies and other incidentals
• Notes are made of the interview on the client’s card.
• A volunteer works in the store room sorting and packaging the food items which are donated and accessed from various sources, e.g. churches, Lotterywest, etc.
• Bread is always available, and sometimes cakes or fruit and vegetables
• At Christmastime, names and addresses are taken, along with ages of the children in families, and food parcels and gifts are given out.
Anglicare buys in quite a lot of food, but is very thankful for the many donations, particularly from the participating churches.

At Christmas time, Grace Church participates in collecting articles for Christmas Hampers to provide to Anglicare.
