Easter-Pentecost
The Easter Triduum is
simply the beginning of
Eastertime, for the
festival lasts fully
fifty days until
Pentecost. Throughout
this time, the principal
sign of the crucified
and raised Christ in our
midst is the Paschal
Candle blessed in the
darkness just before
dawn on Easter Day. The
great candle is marked
with the blood-red cross
of sacrifice – this year
a Russian Orthodox cross
with the title-plate and
foot-rest still in
place. The candle also
bears the marks of the
passion – the five
wounds of love in five
red nails containing
incense. The Greek
letters Alpha and Omega,
together with the
numerals of this current
year of grace, proclaim
the truth that God is
eternally Christlike,
always and everywhere,
for in God there is no
un-Christlikeness at
all.
Ascension Sunday
The fortieth day of
Easter is Ascension Day,
which falls on Thursday
1st May. We celebrate
the Ascension here next
Sunday, rejoicing that
the crucified and living
Lord is active and
available in every time
and place.
Fifty Days of Joy
Eastertime runs for the
full fifty days from
Easter Day through to
the Day of Pentecost on
Sunday 11 May.
Next Sunday’s Lections:
Pentecost–
Acts 2: 1-21; 1 Cor
12:1-13; Jn 20:19-23
