Lent-Easter
2008
Easter, like its parent
feast of the Passover,
is a lunar festival
calculated according to
phases of the moon. In
the year 365CE
rules were established
for the Western Church,
determining that Easter
Day can never be earlier
than March 22. As
Easter Day 2008 falls on
Sunday March 23, this is
a once-in-a-century
event. The next time
Easter falls this early
is 2160! Following an
older calendar, Eastern
Orthodox Easter falls on
April 27 2008
Lent-Easter 2008
Easter Day is the
Sunday following the
Paschal Full Moon date
for the year. In June
325CE astronomers approximated
astronomical full moon
dates for the Christian
church, calling them
Ecclesiastical Full Moon
dates. From 326CE
the PFM date has always
been the EFM date after
March 20 – March 20
being the equinox date
in 325CE.
So Easter Day can never
be earlier than March
22, and Easter Day 2008
falls on Sunday March
23. Lent ends at sunset
on Maundy Thursday, so
counting back forty days
Lent begins this year on
Ash Wednesday, February
6.
Lent Envelopes
We are encouraged in
Lent to give to the
mission of Christ over
and above our usual
weekly giving, to spend
less on ourselves and
think of others. This
is time to give up that
weekly lottery ticket,
that food luxury, to
replace entertainment
with service. Our
shared Lent Meal before
Wednesday’s study group
means we can contribute
the cost of our usual
evening meal to ABM.
Why not do the same at
home one night each week
this Lent, and place the
money saved in your ABM
envelope?
Tuesday Mass
In addition to Sunday,
the Tuesday lunch-hour
mass is offered as a
special Lent
discipline. Please join
us each week or as you
can.
Next Sunday’s Lections:
Lent 4
– 1 Samuel 16:1-13;
Ephesians 5:8-14; John
9:1-41
The Triduum
The heart of the
liturgical year, our
feast of feasts, is the
Triduum, the Great Three
Days of the Christian
Passover: Maundy
Thursday, Good Friday
and Easter Day lived
together as one single
day of salvation. The
Triduum 2008 brochure is
available today,
offering a brief
introduction and history
of this sacred time. We
all need to be fully
engaged with this - old
and young, adults and
children alike.
